Farmers stand by their ham
Pig farmers have been working together in a campaign to highlight the value of their pork. The Pigs are still worth it! drive reaches its climax this afternoon, when the new campaign anthem will be released.
A similar promotion was started in 2008, when thirty farmers grouped together to tackle supermarkets for fairer prices. The winning anthem for this launch was ‘Stand By Your Ham’ which remains a favourite of pork butchers up and down the country.
Local Lincoln pig farmer, Peter Lundgren, backs the movement: “I think pork doesn’t have enough recognition, a lot of time and effort has to go in to making sure our pigs produce the best pork. The extra promotion and gimmick of a song will help communicate our message.”
Kenny Roberts of Elite Meats, Lincoln, also endorses the idea: “Supermarkets are reluctant to buy decent meat for its worthy price, which affects us in a big way. The last song was definitely a triumph for the Pigs are still worth it! campaign.
The campaign organisers have been taking nominations for the new song for the past three weeks. Early suggestions include; ‘Twist and Snout’ and ‘Whole Trotter Love’. This afternoon the winning song will be announced by the National Pig Association and then released to the public via the internet.
It seems true to say that the farmers are really trying to bring home the bacon for their pigs.
